For the last six years, I’ve watched my business partner, Rick, send out a ‘Below the Waterline’ letter every other month. Each time, I’ve seen the way people respond - sharing their own stories, writing back with gratitude, and connecting on a level that’s hard to find in our day-to-day lives. It’s been amazing to see the impact those letters have had on him and the people receiving them.
The idea of this letter comes from the iceberg analogy - you only see about 10% above the surface, while the other 90% lives unseen below the waterline. These letters are about sharing pieces of that hidden 90%, the stories, reflections, and experiences that shape us, but don’t always show up in casual conversations.
Now it’s my turn to start writing my own letters. Unfortunately, as most of you probably know, vulnerability doesn’t exactly come naturally to me (and putting it in writing for the masses? Let’s just say I’d rather arm wrestle a train). But I’ve realized that the best connections in life happen when we do share what’s underneath the surface, even if it feels uncomfortable.
So, I’m diving in. My Below the Waterline letters won’t be about real estate. They’ll be about life, sometimes messy, sometimes joyful, sometimes vulnerable, but always real. My hope is that in sharing some of what’s below my own waterline, we’ll build even stronger connections together.
Be on the lookout for my next letter.
With gratitude (and maybe a tiny bit of stage fright),
